Betelgeuse is one of the major stars in our Universe which is said to transform into a supernova further. Flare around the star was rendered in Apophysis, the rest was photomanipulated in Photoshop. Star image is the property of Solar Dynamics Observatory. Full HD. You can use it freely as a wallpaper, but please do not use it in commercial porpoises without my agreement. :D

Major stars in our area of the galaxy, you mean. In the universe, it would have to be quite large.

yep, but we can't say for sure that there are larger stars or not outside our galaxy. It is so much we have yet to discover that sometimes it blows your mind when you think about it.
